history

Cathlamet was one of the largest, if not the largest, Columbia River Indian villages west of the Cascade Range . The name is said to come from the Chinook language of the Wahkiakum and mean something like "stony river bed".

WR Broughton was the first European to discover Cathlamet in 1792 when reviewing Robert Gray's discovery of the Columbia River. The village, consisting of cedar houses, had around 300 to 400 inhabitants at that time. In 1846, James Birnie, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company , became Cathlamet's first white settler. He opened a trading post called "Birnies Retreat", the remains of which were still standing in 1906. In 1851 the settlement was renamed "Cathlamet".

The city of Cathlamet was founded on February 18, 1907.
