Alexandra and her husband Fred Kassen , a member of the successor group Meistersextett of the Comedian Harmonists , founded the Senftöpfchen theater on March 5, 1959. After her husband's death in 1972, Alexandra Kassen continued to run the theater alone. Today the mustard pot is one of the most famous cabaret and cabaret stages in Germany. For many well-known artists, an appearance in the mustard pot was a stepping stone or an important step in their careers. These include Kleine & Linzenich , Monika Kampmann , Konrad Beikircher , Werner Schneyder and Andreas Etienne . To support the theater, Alexandra Kassen and Alfred Biolek founded the Friends' Association for the Senftöpfchen Theater eV in 1986 .

Kassen always appeared in public with one of her many small, colorful hats on her head, which became her trademark and to which she owed her nickname "Et Hötche" (The little hat). She ran her theater herself - for the last few years together with daughter Alexandra Franziska Kassen - until her death.

Kassen died at the age of 94 and was buried in an urn on July 17, 2017 in Cologne's Melaten Central Cemetery (Hall 71 No. 45/46).
