World Universities Debating Championship
The World Universities Debating Championship ( WUDC for short , colloquially: Worlds (Pl.)) Is the debating world championship that takes place every year from the end of December to the beginning of January and, with around 400 teams, is now the largest debating tournament in the world. The format of the WUDC is the British Parliamentary Style customary at international tournaments , the tournament language is English. The basic idea is that of an intervarsity, i.e. a competition between universities , each of which is assigned exactly one debating club . In fact, however, there are individual cases in which a club covers several institutions, while on the other hand some universities have several societies, for example due to an internal college system.
Competition mode
At the end of December, nine preliminary rounds will be held according to the usual tournament rules of British Parliamentary Style , in which all starting teams will take part. On New Year's Eve the break will be announced in the final rounds, which will then be held in three language categories from January 2nd:
- All teams compete for the main break. The best teams according to Tab 32 reach the round of 16 here.
- The ESL break in the ESL quarter-finals will be reached by the best teams with ESL status according to Tab 16 that have not progressed through the main break. ESL stands for English as Second Language and ESL status is given to a team whose members meet certain limiting criteria with regard to their chances of learning English. Non-native speakers who have not spent several years in English-speaking countries receive this status.
- The EFL break into the EFL semi-finals is made by the eight best teams with EFL status according to the tab that have not progressed through the main break or the ESL break. EFL stands for English as Foreign Language and is the category for speakers who had even less knowledge of the English language than speakers with ESL status, i.e. who only learned English as a second or third foreign language and who have never spent a long time in English-speaking countries .
