The Berlin Debating Union e. V. (short: BDU ) is the German and English speaking debating club of the Berlin universities . Founded in 1999, the association with around 100 members today has developed into one of the largest and most successful national and international debating clubs in Germany. The BDU became German champions in 2002 and 2014, organized the championship in 2001, 2008 and 2014 itself, reached final rounds at European and world championships and hosted the 2006 European championships and the 2013 world championships .

history

The Berlin Debating Union began with regular debates under the name "Streitzeit (Berlin Debating Union)", founded by Jens Fischer and Kai Monheim in autumn 1999 at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin . Issues were debated with the audience in public forums. The competition-oriented debating in British Parliamentary Style started with the move to the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 2002 it was formally founded as the Berlin Debating Union eV Debating Club in Berlin . In the same year, the young club hosted the first German debating championship.

From the beginning, the BDU cultivated both its national and its international profile. So she was not only successful from the start in the German-language tournament series of the ZEIT Debatten and won the German championship in 2002, but also initiated the Central and Eastern European Debating Tournament (CEET) in Berlin and presented the best German at the European Championships in Zagreb in 2003 Team and the best German speaker. The BDU also took part in the 2003 World Cup in Stellenbosch, South Africa . The upward trend in participation in international tournaments continued in Istanbul , Prague , Oxford , Vilnius , Dubrovnik , Cork , Rotterdam , Gdansk and numerous other competitions. For CEET 2004, the BDU received around 80 participants from eleven countries, for the Berlin Open 2005 39 teams from 19 countries. In 2006, the Berlin Debating Union hosted the European Universities Debating Championship , and in 2008 again the German Championship.
