Ochropleura leucogaster is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae). The species is native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Migratory moths can also be found in Central and Western Europe.

features

The wingspan of the moth is 32 to 36 millimeters. The very narrow forewings are mostly dark brown in color and relatively unmarked. The costal edge has a broad, straight, light brown stripe from the root to just behind the indistinct kidney blemishes . Ring and kidney defects are often outlined in thin white. Occasionally a yellowish line can be seen on the forewings.

The caterpillar is brownish-gray in color and has fine whitish back and side back lines as well as a wide, yellowish side stripe.

The pupa measures 13.5 to 16 millimeters in length and 4.5 to 6 mm in width. It is dark brown in color, with the rear edges of segments A3 to A6 tending to red. The integument is heavily roughened on the head, thorax and wing appendages, somewhat less rough on the other appendages of the head / thorax area. The abdomen is generally rough and heavily punctured. The cremaster is finely roughened and has two fork-shaped, longer thorns (0.5 to 0.6 mm) with blunt ends and four shorter, hook-shaped bristles (0.25 to 0.30 mm long), two bristles on the side and two Bristles on the back.

Similar species

The drawing of the wings of Ochropleura leucogaster is similar to that of the smaller, light-edged earth owl ( Ochropleura plecta ) (wingspan 28 to 34 mm) and the larger Alpine matt earth owl ( Albocosta musiva ) (wingspan 38 to 44 mm). Due to the size differences, confusion is unlikely. Further distinguishing features: the hind wings of leucogaster are bright white, the upper side of the abdomen is very light and the front edge of the forewings does not form a tooth inward.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in the Mediterranean area, southern Europe, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel and North Africa. It prefers warm, dry terrain up to an altitude of about 1200 meters. Ochropleura leucogaster has also been recorded as a hiker in northern France, southern England, southern Germany and northern Romania.

Way of life

The moths are mostly nocturnal, flying in two generations from April to May and from August to November. You visit the bait and come to artificial light sources . The caterpillars live polyphagous to be found on tobacco plants, clover ( lotus ) and other herbaceous plants .
