Debating at universities has a long tradition, especially in the Anglo-Saxon region. In Great Britain, the first debating club was founded in 1815 at the University of Cambridge . In the US, debating is part of school education; Debating is very often offered as an extra-curricular program (“club”), less often as a subject (elective). The debating clubs have been competing at national and international tournaments for several years. Debating has also been a trend in Germany since the early 1990s. Some students at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , who founded the Tübingen Debate in 1991, were pioneers . In 1999, with the founding of the Berlin Debating Union , a development based on international competitions began. There are now over 60 debating clubs at the university locations in German-speaking countries.

Large German-language competitions for students take place in particular within the series of campus debates organized by the Association of Debating Clubs at Universities . One of them is the German debating championship, the highlight of the season. Under the patronage of the Federal President , the non-profit Hertie Foundation organizes the youth debates project for schoolchildren, which is aimed at pupils in secondary levels I and II at 660 general and vocational schools in Germany.

In addition, the JCI international association also offers debating as a competition for the German Business Juniors. Within the association, debating is often practiced with the established Iron Communication training by René Elsässer and held in German as part of a championship at the WJD federal conferences and occasionally at the JCI European conference and in 2014 for the first time at the JCI World Congress (Leipzig).
