The Universiti Teknologi MARA (dtsch. University of Technology MARA , Eng. MARA University of Technology ) (UiTM) is a technical university with the main campus in Shah Alam in Malaysia . It was originally intended as a higher education institution for the indigenous peoples of Malaysia and is now one of the largest universities in Malaysia with over 100,000 students. The training offers range from vocational training and courses for university entrance qualification to academic studies. The university's motto is Usaha Taqwa Mulia (effort, dedication, honor).

history

The establishment of the university's predecessor institution goes back to the need to develop rural areas in Malaysia. The development of rural areas in Sri Lanka served as an example . As a result, the Rural and Industrial Development Authority (RIDA) was established as an authority in 1951 by the British colonial administration . This received two training centers in 1956, the Taman Asuhan RIDA in Kuala Lumpur and the Dewan Latehan RIDA in Petaling Jaya as the predecessor of today's university. The Dewan Latehan RIDA offered various external courses, e.g. B. the London Chamber of Commerce or the Australian Society of Accountants . Dewan Latehan RIDA was renamed MARA College in 1965 , so Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) (German Council of the Trust for the Indigenous Population) took over responsibility for the training. In 1965, the college awarded its first degrees in business studies . Due to a shortage of skilled workers, the school was renamed the MARA Institute Of Technology (ITM) in 1967 in order to offer higher education in technical subjects. Years of rapid growth followed. With the ITM Act of 1976 , the institute came under the Ministry of Education from the Ministry of Rural Development . The educational institution was thus also granted the right to acquire academic degrees up to Ph.D. to forgive. In 1999 the institute was renamed Universiti Teknologi MARA and received its current structure.
