history
Madelia was founded on September 10, 1857 under the name Wapaca; Within a year, however, the city was given its current name in honor of the deceased daughter of one of its founding fathers.
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Madelia inhabited 2340 people. The population density was 722.8 people per km ². There were 1000 housing units at an average of 308.9 per km². The Hoquiam population was 85.47% White , 0.64% Black or African American , 0.13% Native American , 0.26% Asian , 0.09% Pacific Islander , 11.88% said other races belong to and 1.54% named two or more races. 20.98% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Madelia were distributed to 911 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18. 48.6% of households were married, 9.0% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 37.3% were not families. 34.0% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 18.8% of all households aged 65 years or older.
