St. John is a small town ( town ) in Whitman County in the US state of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , St. John had a population of 537. St. John is the birthplace of the 20th Washington Governor Mike Lowry .

history

St. John (1890)

St. John was founded in the late 1880s and named after the settler ET St. John. The city was officially recognized on March 10, 1904.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 1.63 square kilometers, which does not include water.

climate

According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , St. John has a warm summer Mediterranean climate ("Csb" for short), which, however , is classified as a dry, humid continental climate due to its cold winter months .

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , St. John had 537 residents, 261 households, and 145 families. The population density was 329.1 per km ². There were 304 housing units at an average density of 186.3 per km².

The population consisted of 94.6% whites , 0.2% African American , 0.4% Indian , 0.2% Asian , 0.4% Pacific islanders , 0.4% from other "races" and 3.9% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 1.9% of the population.

Of the 261 households, 22.2% had children under the age of 18, 47.1% were run by married couples living together , 6.9% by single mothers and 1.5% by single fathers; 44.4% were non-families. 39.5% of the households were singles and 22.6% were single persons over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.06 and the average family size was 2.78 people.

The median age in the city was 50.8 years. 22.3% of the population were under 18, 3.8% between 18 and 24, 15.3% between 25 and 44, 28.8% between 45 and 64 and 29.8 65 years or older. 45.8% of the population were men and 54.2% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , St. John had 548 residents, 258 households, and 163 families. The population density was 406.9 per km ². There were 279 housing units at a mean density of 207.2 per km².

The population was 97.81% whites , 0.18% Indians , 0.55% Asians , and 1.46% two or more “races” . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 1.64% of the population.

Of the 258 households, 22.1% had children under the age of 18, 54.7% were run by married couples living together , 5.8% by single mothers; 36.8% were non-families. 34.1% of the households were singles and 20.2% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.72 people.

The median age in the city was 49 years. 20.8% of the population were under 18, 3.3% between 18 and 24, 20.4% between 25 and 44, 25.2% between 45 and 64 and 30.3 65 years or older. There were 93.6 men for every 100 women, and 86.3 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 33,393 and that of families was US $ 44,643. Men had a median income of US $ 31,389 compared to US $ 18,750 for women. The per capita income was US $ 18,722. About 5.4% of families and 7.4% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 13.2% of those under 18 and 3.6% of those over 65.
