Early years and political advancement
Clarence Martin grew up in Cheney and then studied at the University of Washington until 1906 . He then worked in his father's company, which ran flour mills. After the death of his father, he took over the management of the company. Martin had been the mayor of Cheney since 1928. In 1932 he was elected as the Democratic Party candidate with 57:34 percent of the vote against Republican John Arthur Gellatly as the new governor of Washington. The outcome of this election followed the national trend that brought Democrats electoral victories almost everywhere in the United States. The high point of this development was the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt as US President.
Washington governor
Martin took up his new office on January 9, 1933. After re-election in 1936, he was able to remain in office until January 13, 1941. During this time, the great economic crisis, which at the beginning of the 1930s had caused major problems not only in Washington State, was overcome. The country also benefited from the president's New Deal policy. Martin also made his own efforts to solve the economic problems. Work measures have been initiated to reduce unemployment. At the beginning of Martin's tenure, the unemployment rate was 25 percent. For this reason, too, the construction of dams and bridges was initiated. The governor set up a planning council for the logistical implementation of the measures. An emergency aid program has also been launched for those hardest hit by the crisis. Due to the success of his measures, the governor was quite popular with the population.
