Location of Selah in Yakima County |
Selah is a city ( City ) in Yakima County in the State of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Selah had 7,147 residents.
history
Selah was officially recognized as a local authority on April 3, 1919. The government consists of a mayor and a city council. The Tree Top, Inc. (founded in 1960), an apple processing cooperative has its headquarters and two processing plants in Selah. In 2004, the Yakama bought the old Hi-Country juice factory, which they operated until 2010. The factory is currently operated by its owner Sun-Rype Products USA , the US subsidiary of Western Canada's largest juice and fruit snack maker. It continues to make branded apple juice and other beverages. There are a number of other fruit companies that have their warehouses in Selah; the reason can be seen in the vicinity of the cultivation areas in the nearby Wenas Valley as well as in the access to regional rail and road connections for shipping to the markets. Selah and the Wenas Valley are increasingly serving as "dormitories" for the larger city of Yakima in the south. Because of the nearby orchards and cider plants, Selah is often referred to as the "Apple Juice Capital of the World".
The Washington section of the Audubon Society hosts an excursion to the Hazel Wolf Bird Sanctuary in the upper Wenas Valley, 22 miles north of Selah, every Memorial Day weekend . Wenas Lake , an irrigation reservoir popular with anglers, is also in the upper valley . The wenas Creek flows from the reservoir through the agricultural lower wenas Valley . The Wenas Creek Mammoth (Wenas Creek Mammoth) was found here. The creek flows into the Yakima River .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.71 km², of which 11.5 km² is land and the rest is water.
