Fofó Iosefa Fiti Sunia
Fofó Iosefa Fiti Sunia (born March 13, 1937 in Pago Pago ) is a politician of the Democratic Party of the United States . Between 1981 and 1988 he was the official non-voting delegate to the US foreign territory American Samoa in the United States House of Representatives .
Career
Fofó Sunia attended the public schools in his home country and then studied until 1960 at the University of Hawaiʻi in Honolulu . He then held various government and administrative offices in his home country. From 1961 to 1966 he was a translator on the governor's staff . He was also an electoral commissioner in American Samoa from 1962 to 1970. In 1964 he founded the Samoan News newspaper . Between 1966 and 1972 he was also Minister of Tourism in his homeland. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1970 to 1978 he was a member of the American Samoa Senate . He was also President of the American Samoan Development Corporation from 1965 to 1971 .
In the 1980 congressional election , Sunia was elected as the first official congressional delegate for American Samoa to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1981. After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on September 6, 1988 . His resignation came after he was charged with financial inconsistencies; He was succeeded by Eni Faleomavaega . Today he lives in his birthplace Pago Pago.
