Carn Connachtach

Cairn

Carn Connachtach (also called Connachtan or Curraghadoo; the Carn Mhic Táil of Annals and Legends) is an impressive cairn about eight meters high and almost 100 m in diameter at the base in the townland of Curraghadoo ( Irish Curracha Dubha ) near Kilshanny and Ennistimon south of the Dereen River in central County Clare , Ireland .

After the construction of the megalithic systems was stopped, the stone boxes came on. Some are found individually, but more often also grouped under mounds of earth or stone. A much smaller cairn at Poulawack near Noughaval , excavated in 1934, contained 18 stone box burials with Bronze Age grave goods. It does not necessarily follow from this that the unexcavated Carn Connachtach also contains many stone boxes.

Popular belief says that the cairn was the inauguration place of the kings of Corcomroe ( Corca Mrua ). The name Carn Connachtach means that an army from Connacht is buried here . The annals recorded an otherwise unregistered battle between groups of the O'Brien clan nearby in 1573.
