Joe Skeen
Joseph Richard "Joe" Skeen (born June 30, 1927 in Roswell , New Mexico , † December 7, 2003 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1980 and 2003 he represented the second constituency of the state of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .
Early years
Joe Skeen moved to Seattle with his parents when he was still young . There he attended O'Dea High School until 1944 . In the final year of World War II , he was a soldier in the US Navy . He then continued his education with a degree at Texas A&M University . He later ran a ranch.
Political career
Joe Skeen became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1962 and 1965 he was chairman of the party in New Mexico, and from 1960 to 1970 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1964 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention . In 1970 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of New Mexico. In 1974 and 1978 he was narrowly beaten in the gubernatorial elections.
After Harold L. Runnels' death , Skeen was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives. Between 1980 and 2000 he was confirmed in office in the congressional elections. In 1997, Skeen announced that he had Parkinson's disease . For this reason, he decided not to run again in the 2002 elections. His term in Congress ended on January 3, 2003. His seat then went to Steve Pearce . Joe Skeen died eleven months after retiring from political life in his native Roswell.
