Xochitl Torres Small (born November 15, 1984 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American politician . She was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018 . Small part of the Democratic Party and represents the second congressional district of New Mexico .

Life

Xochitl Torres Small grew up in Las Cruces , New Mexico. Her mother was a teacher, her father a social worker. She graduated from Waterford Kamhlaba United World College in Swaziland and earned a Bachelor's degree from Georgetown University . She first worked in New Mexico, including in the local office of US Senator Tom Udall .

After graduating from the Law School of the University of New Mexico , she worked as a law clerk for federal judge Robert C. Brack . After that, she joined a law firm as a lawyer. She specializes in water law.

politics

Torres Small ran in the 2018 Congressional election in New Mexico's 2nd electoral district, where Republican Steve Pearce did not run again because he was running for governor . She prevailed against another applicant in the democratic primaries with 72.6% of the vote. The general election she won 50.9% against the Republican candidate, Yvette Herrell , which received 49.1%.

Herrell and Fox News reported irregularities in the election.
