Charles P. Clever

Charles P. Clever (born February 23, 1830 in Cologne , † July 8, 1874 in Tome , New Mexico ) was an American politician of Prussian origin. Between 1867 and 1869 he represented the New Mexico Territory in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Charles Clever was born in Cologne in 1830. He attended the schools in his hometown and then studied at the University of Bonn . In 1848 he emigrated to the United States, where he settled in Santa Fe in what was then New Mexico in 1850 . Between 1855 and 1862 he worked there in trade. In 1857 he was appointed US Marshal for that territory. He also became a co-owner of the Santa Fe Weekly Gazette, which was published in both English and Spanish. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1861. He then began his new profession in Santa Fe.

Political career and further curriculum vitae

Charles Clever became a member of the Democratic Party . During the Civil War , he was adjutant general in the New Mexico Territory and commander of the militia there. He held this office again between 1867 and 1868. At the same time he was Attorney General in his territory from 1862 to 1867 . After a controversial election, Charles Clever moved into the US House of Representatives as a delegate. The election was successfully challenged by his predecessor José Francisco Chaves and Clever had to cede his delegate seat in Congress on February 20, 1869 back to Chaves.

After his time in Washington ended , Clever returned to work as a lawyer. He was also tasked with revising the laws of the New Mexico Territory. Charles Clever died in July 1874 and was buried in Santa Fe.
