Ben Ray Luján (born June 7, 1972 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the US House of Representatives since January 2009 , where he represents the third congressional electoral district of the state of New Mexico.

Life

Ben Luján's father of the same name was a member and president of the New Mexico House of Representatives until his death in 2012 . His mother worked in the school administration. He first attended Pojoaque Valley High School and then the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and New Mexico Highland University .

Political career

Before serving as a congressman, Luján held numerous public offices. Between 2004 and 2008 he was a member and since 2005 chairman of the Public Regulation Commission of New Mexico. He was deputy finance minister of this state and head of department in the ministry of education.

In the 2008 election , Luján was elected to the US House of Representatives with 57% of the vote against two competitors, where he replaced Tom Udall , who had switched to the Senate , on January 3, 2009 . In the next election in 2010 he defended his seat with almost 57 percent of the vote, in all subsequent elections he achieved well over 60 percent, most recently in 2018 .

Luján advocates renewable energies and supports corresponding programs. He is a member of the Committee on Homeland Security and the Science Committee. From 2015 to 2019 he was head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the election campaign arm of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, since 2019 he has been Assistant Democratic Leader , the fourth-highest rank, to their closer leadership and is a confidante of the spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi .

After New Mexico's former Democratic Senator Tom Udall declared in March 2019 that he would not run again in the upcoming 2020 election to the United States Senate , Luján declared his interest in running for this seat.
