Thomas Gayle Morris (born August 20, 1919 in Eastland County , Texas , † March 4, 2016 in Amarillo , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1969 he represented the first constituency of the state of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Morris moved to New Mexico in his youth. Between November 12, 1937 and March 22, 1944, he served in the US Navy . He then worked as a farmer and rancher in Quay County , New Mexico. Until 1948 he studied at the University of New Mexico .

Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1953 and 1958 he was an MP in the New Mexico House of Representatives . In the 1958 congressional elections, Thomas Morris was elected to the US House of Representatives. There he took over on January 3, 1959 the mandate of John Joseph Dempsey, who died on March 11, 1958 . In the meantime, that seat in Congress had remained vacant. After a few re-elections, Morris was able to complete a total of five legislative terms in the House of Representatives by January 3, 1969. In the elections of 1968 he failed because of Manuel Lujan , the candidate of the Republican Party .

In 1972, Thomas Morris ran unsuccessfully within his party for nomination as a candidate for the US Senate . He was then an advisor and vice president of Bank Securities, Inc. Thomas Morris most recently lived in Albuquerque.
