Harry Teague

Harry Teague (born June 29, 1949 in Gracemont , Caddo County , Oklahoma ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). From 2009 to 2011 he represented the second constituency of the state of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Harry Teague came from an impoverished family who rented a farm. He spent the first nine years in rural Oklahoma, where there wasn't even running water in the house. In 1958 the family moved to Hobbs , New Mexico. Teague attended high school there, but dropped out to work in the oil fields. He founded his own company, which today employs around 250 people. He is a member of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association . Harry Teague and his wife Nancy have two children and five grandchildren.

Political career

Between 1999 and 2006 Teague was a member of the County Board of Commissioners in Lea County . In the congressional elections of 2008, he was able to prevail as his party's candidate with 56% of the vote against the Republican Edward R. Tinsley and move into the US House of Representatives. The election result was in line with the federal trend, in which the Democrats had a major electoral victory and which culminated in the election of Barack Obama in the presidential election. Teague was the first Democrat to win in New Mexico's second constituency in 28 years. He began his mandate on January 3, 2009 and was a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Veterans Affairs. In the 2010 congressional election, he lost his seat to Republican Steve Pearce , who had also been his predecessor.
