Georgia Lee Lusk (born May 12, 1893 in Carlsbad , New Mexico , † January 5, 1971 in Albuquerque , New Mexico) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1949 she represented the first constituency of the state of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Georgia Lee Lusk, née Witt, attended the public schools in her home country and then studied at Highlands University in Las Vegas . She then attended the Colorado State Teachers College and until 1914 the New Mexico State Teachers College , where she was trained as a teacher. After that she worked as a teacher. Between 1919 and 1943 she also ran the family ranch. In the education sector, she was promoted to school councilor in Lea County . She held this office from 1925 to 1929. From 1931 to 1935 and again from 1943 to 1947, she was Superintendent of Public Instruction in charge of the school system in New Mexico. From 1941 to 1942, she oversaw schools in Guadalupe County .

Political career

Georgia Lusk was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1928 and 1948 she attended the respective Democratic National Conventions as a delegate . In 1946 she was elected to the US House of Representatives as her party's candidate. There she took the seat on January 3, 1947, which had remained vacant since Clinton Presba Anderson was appointed US Secretary of Agriculture in June 1945. But since she was no longer nominated for the next election, she could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1949 .

Between 1949 and 1953 she was a member of a commission that dealt with claims against the government in connection with the costs of the war. From 1955 to 1960 she again directed the school system of New Mexico. She died in January 1971 and was buried in Carlsbad.
