Lawrence Coughlin

Robert Lawrence Coughlin (born April 11, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , †  November 30, 2001 in Mathews , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1969 and 1993 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lawrence Coughlin was the nephew of Congressman Clarence Dennis Coughlin (1883-1946). He grew up on his father's farm near Scranton . He then attended the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville ( Connecticut ) until 1946 . He then studied economics at Yale University until 1950 . Between 1950 and 1952 he served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War . He then studied at Harvard University until 1954 . After a subsequent law degree at Temple University in Philadelphia and his admission to the bar in 1959, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1965 and 1967 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; from 1967 to 1969 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1968 congressional elections , Coughlin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Richard Schweiker on January 3, 1969 . After eleven re-elections, he was able to complete twelve legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . During this time the end of the Vietnam War , the Watergate affair and the end of the civil rights movement fell . He was considered a moderate to liberal Republican. In 1992 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Lawrence Coughlin worked for a law firm in the federal capital Washington. He died in Mathews on November 30, 2001 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
