Henry John Heinz III

Henry John Heinz III (born October 23, 1938 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  April 4, 1991 in Montgomery , Pennsylvania) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Pennsylvania in both chambers of Congress .

Heinz was a great-grandson and heir to Henry John Heinz , the founder of the HJ Heinz Company . He was married to Teresa Simoes Ferreira , who became the wife of John Kerry after his death .

After studying at Phillips Exeter Academy , Yale University and Harvard Business School , he joined the United States Air Force in 1963 . From 1971 to 1976 he was a member of the United States House of Representatives , after which he was elected US Senator . In 1982 and 1988 he was re-elected, each time investing considerable sums of money in his election campaign.

Heinz died in a crash of his private plane, in which six other people were killed. His plane had problems with the flaps and a helicopter had ascended to investigate the problem. The two aircraft collided and crashed into a school, where two playing children were also killed.

A school and several research facilities are named after Heinz. In 1991, the year he died, he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
