William F. Clinger
William Floyd Clinger Jr. (born April 4, 1929 in Warren , Warren County , Pennsylvania ) is a former American politician . Between 1979 and 1997 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Clinger attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1947 the Hill School in Pottstown . This was followed by studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore until 1951 . During the Korean War , he served in the US Navy from 1951 . He stayed in the military until 1955. Between 1955 and 1962 he worked for New Process Co. in his hometown of Warren. After studying law at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville and being admitted to the bar in 1965, he began to practice this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1967 and 1968 he was a member of a constitutional convention of the state of Pennsylvania; in August 1972 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach , on which President Richard Nixon was nominated for re-election.
In the 1978 congressional election , Clinger was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Joseph S. Ammerman on January 3, 1979 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1997 . Since 1993 he has represented the fifth district of his state there as the successor to Richard T. Schulze . From 1995 to 1997 he was Chairman of the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight . In 1996 he renounced another candidacy.
Since the end of his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William Clinger has been a Senior Fellow for the Study of American Government at Johns Hopkins University.
