John E. Peterson

John E. Peterson (born December 25, 1938 in Titusville , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2009 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Peterson attended Titusville High School and then studied at Pennsylvania State University . Between 1958 and 1964 he served in the US Army . He then ran a grocery store in Pleasantville for 26 years . He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1969 and 1977 he was a local councilor in Pleasantville; from 1977 to 1984 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . He was then a member of the State Senate between 1985 and 1996 .

In the 1996 congressional election , Peterson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded William F. Clinger on January 3, 1997 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In 1998 he became a member of the Grants Committee and three of its sub-committees. He was considered a politician with little connection to environmental protection. Instead, he advocated better exploitation of American energy sources, especially gas. In 2008 he decided not to run again.
