Elmer Greinert "Bud" Shuster (born January 23, 1932 in Glassport , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania ) is a former American politician . Between 1973 and 2001 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bud Shuster studied at the University of Pittsburgh until 1954 and then served in the US Army between 1954 and 1956 . He then continued his own education until 1960 and 1967 respectively at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and the American University in Washington, DC . At that time he also ran his own computer company. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1976 and 1988 he participated as a delegate at all Republican National Conventions .

In the 1972 congressional election , Shuster was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded John H. Ware on January 3, 1971 . After 14 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on February 3, 2001 . Between 1995 and 2001 he was Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure. During his time in Congress, the Vietnam War ended . In 1974, the Watergate affair also weighed on the work of Congress .

Bud Shuster's resignation on February 3, 2001 was due to health reasons. But there was also speculation that due to internal party regulations he would have had to give up his committee chairmanship in the new legislative period and that he had therefore resigned. When the by-election was due, his son Bill was elected as his successor in Congress.
