The blunt-winged grass owl ( Mythimna impura ) is a butterfly from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 30 to 35 millimeters. The blunt-winged grass owl is darker in color than the related species Mythimna straminea and Mythimna pallens . However, the brightness of the basic color can vary. There are no black fringing points on the medium-gray hind wings, at most on the wing tip (apex) there can be some. There are 3–4 black dots on the forewings.
distribution
Mythimna impura is distributed in the Palaearctic region of Ireland in the west via Turkey , Syria , the Caucasus , Kazakhstan and Mongolia to Japan in the east. In Europe you can find the species from the Arctic Circle to Spain and Italy (including Sicily ) in the south and in the northern regions of Greece.
Way of life
The moths fly in two generations from June to September. The caterpillars overwinter and can be found from September and the following year to May. They feed on sedges ( Carex ) and various sweet grasses (Poaceae). The species inhabits wetlands, meadows and forest clearings and is still relatively common.
