George Gekas

George William Gekas (born April 14, 1930 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 2003 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Gekas attended William Penn High School in his hometown of Harrisburg until 1948 . He then studied until 1952 at Dickinson College in Carlisle . Between 1953 and 1955 he served in the US Army . After a subsequent law degree at the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle and his admission to the bar in 1958, he began to work in this profession. From 1960 to 1966 he was the assistant district attorney in Dauphin County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1966 to 1974 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; between 1976 and 1982 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1982 congressional elections , Gekas was elected to the 17th  constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Allen E. Ertel on January 3, 1983 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2003 . During this time, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, as well as the beginning of the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan took place . In 1988, Gekas was one of the MPs entrusted with impeachment proceedings against federal judge Alcee Hastings . Ten years later, in 1998, he served in the same role in the unsuccessful impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton . He was considered one of the most conservative congressmen. In 2002 he was not re-elected. He has not appeared politically since then.
