Abbeville is a city and seat of the county seat in Henry County in the US state of Alabama .

geography

Abbeville is located in southeast Alabama, in the northern part of the county, about 14 miles to the east from Georgia , and about 25 miles to the south from Eufaula .

history

Abbeville is one of the oldest settlements in what is now the southern state. The city is named after "Abbe", a native Indian from the Muskogee tribe . The name includes the word for flower dogwood . In 1819, when the area was still part of the Alabama Territory , a post office was established. In 1944, the African American woman Recy Taylor was raped by a group of six white men. Although the men admitted the crime, two juries refused to convict them. The case has attracted attention and is seen as a contributor to the civil rights movement.

Three structures in Abbeville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 20, 2020, the Kennedy House , the Oates House and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Depot .
