history

In 1527 a first half-timbered church was built in Wagenitz as a branch church of Senzke . The first church patron of Wagenitz was Johann Christoph von Bredow. In 1635 Wagenitz and its church were destroyed by attack by the Swedes. Church patron Hans Christoph von Bredow rebuilt the church in 1664. In 1753 the current church was built as a hall church. It had two side entrances and one entrance in the tower.

Repairs and new plastering were carried out in 1934 and 1935. Bullets and roof damage from the Second World War were repaired between 1949 and 1957. In 1959 the interior of the church was renovated. The ceiling was hung with plywood panels, the lead glass windows were removed due to sponge damage and replaced with frosted glass panes. The tower and the cornices were reconstructed in 2001/02, the exterior plastering and the interior of the church in 2002/03, partly based on photos. The stalls were repainted before Easter 2007.

The spire and the church roof were made of larch wood shingles in 1664. In 1851 the tower got its zinc roof and in 1892 the sound hatches. In 1949 the roof was initially covered with slate, then in 1974 with concrete bricks. In 2001 the zinc tower helmet and the tower decoration with the inscription SDG (Soli Deo Gloria - Alone God be Honor) were renewed and the roof was re-covered with church beavers from 2003.

The tower clock with dial on the east side was installed in 1953; In 1978 another was added on the west side and overhauled during the tower renovation in 2002.

Bells

Originally there were three medieval bronze bells from Lauchhammer in the tower, one of which is still there today. The bell and the belfry were repaired in 1982.

Interior

Picture of Johann Wilhelm von Bredow and Barbara von Görne with family

There are four leaded glass windows in the front of the church. The church stalls including the patronage stalls and the gallery date from the 18th century, the crucifix to the left of the altar, which is also shown on the votive painting , from the 17th century. The 6 m² wide votive painting from 1667 on the right next to the altar shows Hans Christoph von Bredow with his wife Barbara von Görne. His four sons are individually characterized by the painter, while the four daughters are shown schematically. Von Bredow donated the painting to the church as a thank you for surviving the attack by Sweden.

The von Bredow family crypt is under the altar area . The last burial took place around 1840. The crypt was locked after the war and is no longer accessible. The font from the 18th century is provided with a silver baptismal bowl, which is decorated with the family coat of arms of the von Bredow and von Görne.

The pulpit altar dates from the 19th century. The original decorations are no longer there. The picture of the Last Supper on the front of the pulpit was painted in 1843 by the painter "Pein". On the underside of the pulpit lid is a dove motif as a symbol of the Holy Spirit .

The memorial plaques on the left and right of the church are dedicated to the Wagenitzer victims of the First and Second World Wars. The brass chandelier in the middle of the church was made in the 18th century and restored in Rathenow in 2004. The rudiments on the gallery characterize the organ built by Friedrich Hermann Lütkemüller in Wittstock in 1885 . It was repaired at the end of the 19th century and has not been in operation since 1960. The winter church in the rear part of the church was separated in 1959. At the same time the tower entrance was closed, the lower tower area is used as a morgue.
