Madison is a city and also the county seat of Morgan County in the US state of Georgia with 3979 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Madison is about 50 miles east of Atlanta .
history
Madison was on the route taken by Northern General William T. Sherman during the Civil War . On this "march to the sea", areas of land were deliberately devastated and cities burned down in order to weaken the enemy confederation materially and morally. Madison was conquered, but spared. The reason for this was that Madison was home to the Union-loyal Senator Joshua Hill . Hill had a good relationship with Sherman's brother, whom he knew from West Point Military Academy . Hill intervened on behalf of his hometown.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 3,979 inhabitants were distributed over 1,558 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.50 people per household. There are a total of 1760 households.
69.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.01 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 36.3% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 32.9% of all households.
29.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 24.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 44.1% of the population were male and 55.9% were female.
50.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 45.6% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 1.0% as Asian Americans . 1.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 2.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 56,846 USD , while 16.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Several houses before the civil war have been preserved or restored. In 2001, the selected Travel Holiday Magazine , the city's most beautiful small city in the USA, and in 2012 was one of the Madison, according to Budget Travel magazine to the "Top 16 Most Picturesque Villages in the World" .
