Lê Hồng Phong
Lê Hồng Phong (* 1902 , † 1942 ) was a high-ranking functionary of the underground Communist Party of Indochina during the French colonial period . He led the party as general secretary of the Central Committee while abroad . He was arrested by the French authorities in 1941 and died of torture in French custody in 1942.
Background and career
Le Hong Phong came from Nghe An Province . As a young adult he worked in a car repair shop. At the age of eighteen he joined the nationalist modernization movement of the militant nationalist Phan Bội Châu . In 1924 he joined the nationalist movement of Tam Tam Xa in southern China and a year later the Communist Revolutionary Youth League ( Than Nienh ) of Ho Chi Minh . From 1926 he studied at the Whampoa Military Academy and was then sent to the Soviet Union for further training . In the Soviet Union he attended a military aviation school and served as a liaison between the Communist International and Ho Chi Minh.
Party leadership
After Ho Chi Minh was arrested in Hong Kong in 1931, Le Hong Phong became the party's central leader after his return from the USSR. In this function he took part in the 7th Congress of the Comintern in Moscow in 1935.
He was arrested by colonial authorities in French Indochina in 1940. He died on the prison island of Poulo Condore in 1942 as a result of torture. His wife, Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai , was also arrested in 1940 and sentenced to death and executed in 1941.
