history

Motor racing has a long tradition in Portugal. In 1902, the rally from the seaside resort of Figueira da Foz to the capital Lisbon was the first major car race in the country. The 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix was the first Formula 1 world championship race to take place in Portugal, at the Circuito da Boavista , where races have been held since 1951.

For a long time, the races were organized by the Portuguese automobile club Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), founded in 1903, partly alone and partly in cooperation with other organizers and associations. For a long time there was no need for a uniform national association.

The FPAK was founded on August 22nd, 1994, and was recognized on March 4th, 1995 with publication in the Diário da República , the Portuguese legal journal . The association itself therefore specifies 1995 as the year of foundation.

The FPAK is dedicated to various motor sport categories, which it oversees with individual specialist groups, the Comissões (commissions). In particular, six main areas should be mentioned (see below) in which the FPAK organizes most of its competitions.

The Rally Portugal , which is part of the FIA World Rally Championship, is one of the most important races of the FPAK . In 2015, the FPAK also organized a large number of other international and national races, in particular the World Rallycross Championship, and one of the twelve rounds of the 2015 World Touring Car Championship at the Circuito Internacional de Vila Real .

In addition to the competitions mentioned below, the FPAK is the organizer or co-organizer of a large number of other smaller or less sporting races, such as various historical local trips or small municipal rallies. The FPAK cooperates with the Portuguese automobile club Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) on a number of events, especially the rallies .
