history

The first official boxing match in Portugal is the fight between the American Sam McVey and an Englishman named Drumond in Lisbon on July 4, 1909 in front of a large number of spectators. As a result, a number of sports clubs took up boxing, such as the Ginásio Clube Português , the Clube Arte e Sport , the Sport Cruz Quebradense and the Clube Português de Recreio e Desporto .

The FPB was founded in March 1914. After the First World War initially inhibited further development, boxing experienced its first high point in Portugal in the 1920s. With the arrival of boxers from the former Portuguese colonies , especially from Mozambique , boxing experienced a further increase in popularity in the 1940s, with well-attended fights in the popular Parque Mayer district in Lisbon.

Boxing subsequently lost a lot of attention, with a few high points in the late 1950s.

In 1964 the film Belarmino told the story of the formerly successful Portuguese boxer Belarmino Fragoso (1931–1982), a key work of the New Portuguese Cinema .
