The Confederação do Desporto de Portugal ( CDP ) is the sports umbrella organization in Portugal . The umbrella organizations of the individual sports are organized in it. The CDP is based in Algés , a municipality in the Oeiras district , near the capital Lisbon .

history

The CDP was established on 13 January 1990 from a variety of Portuguese sports associations, as a result of Law No. 1/90, of. Lei de Bases do Sistema Desportivo ( port. For Law on the basics of the sport system). The law replaced the previous legal basis, which provided for a relationship between sports associations and the regulating state bodies that was bound by instructions. From then on, the CDP was the umbrella organization of the sports associations, which enabled an agreement-based partnership between the state and the umbrella organizations, as provided by the legislature. This was done on the model of other European umbrella organizations, in German-speaking countries for example the former German Sports Association (DSB) or the Austrian Federal Sports Organization (BSO).

On January 26, 1993 the first board of the "Aliança do Desporto Federado" (Portuguese for: Alliance of Sports Associations) was elected. On August 10, 1993, the association changed its name to its current name.

Since 1997, the CDP board members have been elected for a four-year term. In 2009 the CDP received the newly created non-profit status ( utilidade pública ). In November 2011, the government of the Republic of Portugal awarded the CDP the Medal for Services to Sport ( Medalha de Bons Serviços Desportivos ).
