The International Federation for World Games ( International World Games Association , IWGA ) is an international sports federation, in which the World Games participating sports are merged. His goal is to promote the popularity of the sports he represents .

World Games

The World Games are an international competition for athletes and athletes whose sports and disciplines are not part of the Olympic competition program but are nevertheless widely used worldwide. They always take place one year after the Summer Olympics under the auspices of the ( International Olympic Committee (IOC) ).

history

In 1981 the World Games Council was founded by various international sports federations whose sports were waiting to be included in the Olympic competition program. The purpose of the event is to provide a platform for sports that are not represented at the Summer Olympics . In 1981 the first official games took place in Santa Clara (USA). Three years earlier, the so-called Pre World Games were held in Seoul ( Korea ) in 1978 .

In 1996 the World Games Council was renamed the International World Games Association ( IWGA ).

organization

The association is constituted under Swiss law as an international NGO . The IWGA is a member of the General Association of International Sports Federations . Currently 32 sports associations belong to it (33 with the inclusion of futsal in 2012 by AMF pr).

The most important decision-making body is the General Assembly, which meets every four years before the World Games. It determines the seven-person board and makes important decisions such as the choice of the venue for the World Games and the selection of World Games sports.

The President of the International Canoe Association , José Perurena Lopez , has been the President since 2014 .
