The Federação Portuguesa de Halterofilismo ( FPH ) is the umbrella organization for weightlifting in Portugal . It was founded in 1925 and is based in the Lisbon municipality of São Paulo , at 32 Rua do Marques .

The FPH belongs u. a. the World Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the European Continental Weightlifting Federation (EWF), the Portuguese sports umbrella organization CDP , and the Comité Olímpico de Portugal , the National Olympic Committee of Portugal. However, most of these memberships are temporarily suspended.

The 1992 European Weightlifting Championships were held in Portugal, in Loures near the capital Lisbon.

history

The first records of weightlifting in Portugal go back to 1860. The first internationally successful weightlifter in Portugal was Manuel da Silveira (born October 21, 1867 on the Azores island of Pico ), who only started weightlifting at the age of 37 in the Real Ginásio Clube Português , won a number of national and international prizes, and in 1908 in Paris set a new world record with 186.5 kg. Francisco Padinha , who was born in Olhão in the Algarve in 1870 , also won numerous national championships and broke Silveira's record with 190.5 kg.

In 1925, the FPH was founded in Lisbon as the first Portuguese umbrella organization for weightlifting.

However, previous international successes were not followed by any comparable talent in Portugal, and the sport began to decline in popularity from the 1930s. Portugal rarely took part in international competitions and was very rarely represented at the Olympic Games . A turning point was brought about by the women in the 1980s, especially Sara Duarte (European champion in 1988 and third place in the European Championship in 1989 and 1992) and Eulália Romão , who won silver at the European Championships in 1989, 1990 and 1992. Also worth mentioning are the Portuguese bronze medals for women at the European Championships in 1989, 1990 and 1992. For men, Francisco Coelho has been providing hope since the 1980 European Championship, which he was unable to fulfill as a participant in the Portuguese Olympic team in 1984 with his 13th place. Since then, Portugal's weightlifters have seldom been able to successfully show international presence.

Planned start-up

The FPH has enormous existential problems as it does not enjoy non-profit status ( útilidade pública ) and largely has to get along without public subsidies. Since the problems between the public authorities and the FPH could not be resolved for many years, even after various discussions, active members of the Portuguese weightlifting sport initiated the establishment of a new association. It is to be re-established as Federação Levantamento de Peso Olímpico de Portugal (FLPOP) (as of September 2015) . It has its provisional seat in the premises of the Ginásio Atlético Clube in Baixa da Banheira , Moita district .

The actual FPH is currently inactive (as of 2015) and is considered to be in dissolution. Like largely all sports associations in the country, the FPH also suffers from the reduced, delayed or non-existent public grants, which have completely led to the FPH's activities being suspended. The background to this is the government's rigid austerity policy as a result of the euro crisis .
