Wilfried Kowarik
Wilfried Kowarik OSB (born June 13, 1952 in Vienna ; † January 20, 2018 there ) was an Austrian Benedictine, historian , archivist and prior of the Melk Abbey since 2002 .
Life
Kowarik attended the Bundesrealgymnasium Vienna VII and graduated in 1970. In the same year he entered the Melk Abbey, made his solemn profession in 1975 and was ordained a priest in 1976 . He studied theology at the University of Salzburg and history and geography at the University of Vienna . He has also been a monastery archivist since 1976, since 1981 - until 2014 - he has taught geography and history at the Melk Abbey High School , which he was deputy director until his retirement. He was also active as a cleric magister. On October 12, 2001, Prior Georg Wilfinger was elected as the new abbot of the monastery, making this office vacant. On January 15, 2002, the new abbot therefore appointed Kowarik as the new prior, after consulting the convent.
