Georg Wilfinger OSB (born October 6, 1949 in Immendorf , Hollabrunn district ) is an Austrian Benedictine and since 2001 the 67th abbot of Melk Abbey .

Live and act

Since he grew up in a parish supervised by Melk Abbey, he came into contact with the Benedictines of the abbey at an early age. After graduation at Hollabrunn in 1969 Wilfinger was a novice in Melk dressed . From 1970 he studied theology at the University of Salzburg . In 1973 he made his solemn profession , in 1975 he was ordained a priest by Alois Stöger . From 1983 to 2000 he was Konviktdirektor and taught rk religion at the Melker Stiftsgymnasium . Since 1985 he has also been pastor of the Großriedenthal parish incorporated into the monastery .

Wilfried Kowarik succeeded him as prior . On October 28, 2013 Georg Wilfinger was re-elected by the convent chapter as abbot of the Melk Benedictine Abbey for twelve years. Georg Wilfinger is a board member of the Austrian Conference of Superior and Congregational Economist of the Benedictine Congregation .

His motto as abbot is “ In gaudio servire ” ( To serve in joy ). His abbot's coat of arms shows a sunflower in the left coat of arms field, according to his own statement his favorite flower and a symbol for Jesus Christ , and on the right a vine, symbolic of his parish activities in the wine-growing town of Großriedenthal. A social project for the benefit of Romanian street children in Saniob , of which Melk Abbey is the patron, has been a particular concern of his since taking office .
