The 1972 Automobile World Championship was the 23rd season of the Automobile World Championship, now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . Over twelve races from January 23, 1972 to October 8, 1972, the drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held.

Emerson Fittipaldi won the drivers' championship for the first time. Lotus-Ford became constructors' world champion for the fifth time.

The FIA European Grand Prix title was awarded to the Great Britain Grand Prix in 1972 .

• Designer Luigi Colani presented his futuristically styled Eifelland Formula 1 car, but it was a flop.
• Helmut Marko lost an eye at the French Grand Prix when a stone was thrown up by Ronnie Peterson .
• Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest Formula 1 world champion in Formula 1 history at the age of 25 and remained so until Fernando Alonso won the title in 2005.
