The Royal Aal-al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (or Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought RABIIT , Arabic مؤسسة آل البيت للفكر الإسلامي, DMG Muʾassasat Āl al-Bait li-l-Fikr al-Islāmī ) is an international Islamic institute or think tank headquartered in Amman , the capital of the Kingdom of Jordan .

Foundation and management

The Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (RABIIT) describes itself as an Islamic, non-governmental, independent institute, but is considered close to the royal family and also receives grants from the Jordanian government. The part of the name Ahl al-bait refers to the family of the prophet, whose descendants include the Hashemite royal family. The late King Hussein bin Talal founded the institute in 1980 and entrusted Prince Hassan ibn Talal with its management. The leadership passed to Crown Prince Hamza bin Al-Hussein on August 8, 1999 and then to Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad , who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees (as of November 12, 2017) consists of:

  • Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad , Chief Advisor to the King of Jordan for Religious and Cultural Affairs and Personal Envoy to the King of Jordan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, as Chairman,

and the other board members:

Affiliated organizations and projects

In 2001 the institute started the project “altafsir.com”, a website with a collection of various sources on Koran exegesis ( Tafsīr ). The website is in Arabic and English and offers hundreds of books, Quran commentaries and Tafsir from various Islamic schools of law ( madhhab ) free of charge .

The “ Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center ” (RISSC, Royal Islamic Strategic Study Center ; abbreviation MABDA), founded in 2007, is associated with RABIIT. Since 2009, together with the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in Washington, DC, it has published an annual list of the “500 most influential Muslims” in the world.

The members of the institute meet for a conference every 2-3 years. The last one was held in September 2010, entitled 'Islam and the Environment'.
