Prince Hassan ibn Talal ( Arabic الحسن بن طلال, DMG al-Ḥasan b. Ṭalāl ; * March 20, 1947 in Amman ) is a member of the ruling house of Jordan .

Life

Hassan is the son of Talal of Jordan and his wife Zain al-Sharaf Talal, the brother of the former King Hussein I and the uncle of the current King Abdullah II. He was Crown Prince from 1965 to 1999 .

Prince Hassan studied Oriental Studies at Christ Church College , Oxford . He is known for his support for a tolerant Islam. From 1999 to 2006 he was President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace . From 2000 to 2006 he was President of the Club of Rome . He is the founder of various Arab organizations and u. a. Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Society of Sciences in Jordan. He is keen on a dialogue of religions and called the Trilateral Commission for the Islamic-Christian-Jewish dialogue into being. He is also involved in UNESCO's interfaith advisory committee and is an honorary member of its World Commission on Culture and Development. Prince Hassan acts as a council member for the World Future Council founded by the founder of the Right Livelihood Award Jakob von Uexküll .

Hassan ibn Talal is a passionate diver, was the Jordanian team captain in polo and has a black belt in Taekwondo . He has been married to the Bengali Princess Sarvath, daughter of Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah , since 1968 . The couple has three daughters Rahma, Sumaya and Badiya and their son Rashid.

He is Founder Fellow of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought), Jordan .

Awards and honors

Prince Hassan received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold on ribbon for services to the Republic of Austria . In 2006 he was awarded the Berlin Peace Watch Prize. The liberal rabbinical seminary Abraham-Geiger-Kolleg awarded Prince Hassan the Abraham Geiger Prize in Berlin in 2008 . In the same year he was awarded the Augsburg Peace Prize and the Niwano Peace Prize. Hans Küng gave the laudatory speech . In 2010 he received the Margravine Wilhelmine Prize of the City of Bayreuth for his commitment to the dialogue between religions and the promotion of understanding and harmony between the Islamic and non-Islamic world.

He has received 20 honorary doctorates from universities around the world in the past.

In 2014 he was awarded the tolerance ring of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .
