Sumaya bint al-Hassan , also bint Hassan or El Hassan ( Arabic سمية بنت الحسن, DMG Sumayya bt. al-Ḥasan ; born May 14, 1971 in Amman ) is a Jordanian education manager and princess of the Hashimite family .

Sumaya al-Hassan was born in Amman on May 14, 1971 as the daughter of Prince Hassan ibn Talal , a member of the Hashemite royal family, and his Indian wife Sarvath al-Hassan. Sumaya has two sisters and one brother. She received her education at the Amman Baptist School and at the International Community School as well as at the Sherborne School , a girls' school in Dorset, England . She then studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in art history , with a particular focus on early sources of Islamic art and architecture .

Sumaya al-Hassan married her father's then private secretary and later deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Jordan, Nasser Judeh , in August 1992 . They have four children together who were born between 1994 and 1998. The couple divorced in 2008.

Sumaya al-Hassan worked in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) London and at Sotheby's . In 1991 she was the founder and namesake of the Princess Sumaya University of Technology (PSUT) , the only private nonprofit university in Jordan . The owner is the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) founded by her father . The aim was to establish a regional center for IT research and development in Amman with the PSUT. Sumaya is on the university's board of directors and was appointed president of the Royal Scientific Society in 2006. She was previously a member of their board of trustees .

In 2004 she launched the Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship (QRCE) , Jordan's only university center for business start-ups, and launched the Queen Rania National Business Plan competition for prospective student entrepreneurs. As an education manager, Sumaya al-Hassan dedicated herself from the beginning to the connection between excellent education, science and technology as well as investment in the future. With this message she travels to international science and education congresses.

In her capacity as President of the Royal Scientific Society , Sumaya al-Hassan is a member of the Higher Council for Science and Technology (HCST), a government body that advises the Jordanian state on issues and developments in science and technology . She was also elected Chair of the Board of Governors of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA).

She was one of the pioneers of SESAME , the “ Cern of the Middle East”, which was created under the auspices of UNESCO and in close cooperation with eight countries in the region. In May 2017, Sumaya al-Hassan led the Jordanian delegation at the official opening of SESAME. She is still one of the important supporters of the project, in which scientists from Israel and Iran are also researching together.

In November 2017, Sumaya al-Hassan headed the 8th World Science Forum , which took place in Jordan under the motto "Science for Peace" at the Dead Sea and for the first time in the Middle East .

Princess Sumaya al-Hassan has been Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Amman Baccalaureate School, an international, co-educational institution, and a member of the board of the Hashemite Society for Education since 2005. She firmly believes in the importance of creative education not only at university level, but already at school level, and sees this as the key to change and the future prosperity of the region.

In 2009 she became a member of the Jordanian University Council.

As an enthusiastic archaeologist, she supports the work of the British Institute for Archaeological Research in Amman and the Council for British Research in the Levant .

honors and awards

Sumaya al-Hassan has received various honors and awards for her commitment to promoting education, science and research, including the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Jordanian Star (Wisam al-Kawkab al-Urdani) in 2006 and the Lazio Prize Between Europe and the in 2009 Mediterranean (Italy), as well as awards from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Republic of France and the Sudan.
