He worked in various positions in China on behalf of Fiat . In 1938 he returned to Italy. During the Second World War he joined the partisan group Giustizia e Libertà (German justice and freedom). Because of his membership of the anti-fascist movement, Peccei was imprisoned in February 1943 and not released until 25 months later. Immediately after the end of the war, he co-founded Alitalia in 1946 . In the course of his life he held various influential positions in both Italian and international companies and institutions.

Particular attention is paid to his life due to the fact that he co- founded the Club of Rome with Alexander King in 1968 . The publications of this association - the study published in 1972 on the future of the world economy The Limits to Growth - aroused worldwide media interest also because of their negative forecasts.

His son was the physicist Roberto Peccei (1942-2020).
