Celaenia is a genus from the family of the true orb web spiders and comprises eleven species . The individual species are common in Australia , New Zealand and Tasmania . The best known is Celaenia excavata , which is called the bird dropping spider in Australia because it looks very similar to the droppings of birds. This form of mimesis protects the spiders from potential predators.
