Robert "Robbie" Middleby (born August 9, 1975 in Newcastle , New South Wales ) is a former Australian football player and since 2011 CEO of Newcastle United Jets FC .
Club career
Middleby played for five different clubs ( Newcastle Breakers , Wollongong Wolves , Auckland Kingz , Carlton SC , Newcastle United ) in the National Soccer League (NSL) between 1993 and 2004 and won with the Wolves in 2001 with a 2-1 win over South Melbourne FC the Australian Championship. Between 1996 and 1999 he played for three years for the German second division club KFC Uerdingen 05 , but only made a total of 27 appearances.
After the dissolution of the NSL at the end of the 2003/04 season, he signed a contract with the newly founded A-League club Sydney FC in early 2005 . With Sydney he won the Oceania Club Championship 2004/05 and took part in the FIFA Club World Cup 2005 , in which he was not used. His first season with Sydney ended with winning the championship with a 1-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners , Middleby came during the season under coach Pierre Littbarski but mostly only for partial appearances.
Under his successor Terry Butcher , the versatile player on the right developed into a core force, although he was out for two months early in the season due to a broken collarbone. At the end of the season he was voted Player of the Year by his teammates. As early as October 2008 it was announced that he would be joining the North Queensland Fury expansion team for the 2009/10 season . There he ended his career as an active footballer.
Since 2011 he has been the Executive Director of Newcastle United Jets FC .
National team
In 1995 Middleby took part with the Australian U-20 selection at the Junior World Cup in Qatar. He stormed alongside Mark Viduka and reached the quarter-finals with the team. There they failed with 1: 2 after extra time to Portugal.
For the finals of the OFC Nations Cup in 2002 he was appointed to the Australian senior team for the first time and came to a total of five appearances over the course of the tournament, including the 0-1 defeat in the final against hosts New Zealand . The five tournament games were Middlebys only national team appearances.
