Coordinates: 32 ° 42 ′ S , 151 ° 35 ′ E The City of Maitland is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 391.5 km² and has about 77,300 inhabitants.
Maitland is located in the east of the state in the Hunter Valley about 170 km north of the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprises 62 hamlets and hamlets, including Aberglassyn, Anambah, Ashtonfield, Bolwarra, Dagworth, Farley, Gillieston Heights, Greenhills, Harpers Hill, Lochinvar, Lorn, Louth Park, Luskintyre, Maitland , East Maitland, Melville, Metford, Morpeth, Oakampton , Oakampton Heights, Pitnacree, Rutherford, Telarah, Tenambit, Thornton, Windella, Windermere, Woodberry. The seat of the City Council is in the city of Maitland, which has about 78,000 inhabitants.

The Maitland City Council has 13 members who are elected by LGA residents. Three members each come from the four wards East, West, North and Central, the chairman and mayor is also elected by all residents of the LGA. The four electoral districts are determined independently of the localities.
