Coordinates: 37 ° 13 ′ S , 146 ° 43 ′ E Lockhart Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 2,895.8 km² and has about 3,100 inhabitants.
Lockhart is located in the south of the state in the area between Murrumbidgee and Murray River about 310 km west of the Australian capital Canberra and 520 km southwest of the metropolis Sydney . The area consists of 28 hamlets and localities: Bidgeemia, Birdlip, Brookong, Brookong North, Edgehill, Fargunyah, French Park, Grubben, Kubura, Long Park, Milbrulong, Mundawaddra, Munyabla, Osborne, Pleasant Hills, Ryan, Tootool, Urangeline, Urangeline East , Woodend, Wrathall, Yerong Creek and parts of Boree Creek, Bullenbong, Galore, Henty, Lockhart and The Rock. The Shire Council is located in Lockhart in the northwest of the LGA, where about 800 people live.

The Lockhart Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the three wards (three councilors each from A, B and C ward). These three districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
