Coordinates: 32 ° 53 ′  S , 151 ° 43 ′  E The City of Newcastle is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 186.8 km² and has about 155,400 inhabitants.

Newcastle is located on the east coast of the state at the mouth of the Hunter River about 160 km northeast of the metropolis of Sydney . The area includes 71 hamlets and towns, including Adamstown, Bar Beach, Beresfield, Birmingham Gardens, Broadmeadow, Callaghan (University), Carrington, Civic, Cooks Hill, Elermore Vale, Fletcher, Georgetown, Hamilton, Hamilton North, Hamilton South, Hexham, The Hill, Islington, Jesmond, The Junction, Kotara, Lambton, Maryland, Maryville, Mayfield, Mayfield East, Mayfield North, Mayfield West, Merewether, Merewether Heights, Minmi, Newcastle, Newcastle East, Newcastle West, New Lambton, North Lambton, Sandgate, Shortland, Stockton, Tarro, Tighes Hill, Warabrook, Waratah, Waratah West, Wickham, Wallsend and parts of Adamstown Heights, Black Hill, Highfields, Kotara Heights, Kotara South, New Lambton Heights and Rankin Park. The City Council is located in the Newcastle district.

Newcastle City Council has 13 members elected by LGA residents. Three members each come from wards 1 to 4, the chairman and mayor are also elected by all residents of the LGA. The four electoral districts are determined independently of the localities.
