Grabouw is a city in the Western Cape Province of South Africa . It is located in the municipality of Theewaterskloof in the Overberg district at an altitude of 264 meters above sea level. In 2011 Grabouw had 30,337 inhabitants.

history

The city's beginnings go back to a post office that was built here at a ford on the Palmiet River on January 1, 1846. In 1856 the German-born trader and painter Wilhelm Langschmidt bought a farm near the ford and founded today's town there. Grabouw received city status only in 1956.

Grabouw is named after Grabow , the German birthplace of the city's founder. He had 23 children.

Economy and Transport

The city is located in the Elgin Valley. Around 60 percent of South African apple exports are produced here. The valley is also known for the large-scale cultivation of chrysanthemums , roses and proteas . It was here that the soft drink Appletiser was invented in 1966 , which consists of pure apple juice that is carbonated.

The city is on the R321 road.

Attractions

The Hottentots Holland Hiking Trail starts in Grabouw and ends at Franschhoek . Nearby is the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve , a protected area for the species-rich fynbos vegetation with more than 1,600 plant species, 150 of which are endemic .
