A South African national soccer team first took part in qualifying for the 1996 Olympic Games after apartheid had been abolished in South Africa and the country was again allowed to participate in international sports competitions, and was able to qualify for the first time for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , but lost there the preliminary round. After that, the qualification for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro was only possible again in 2015 . Since the 2012 Games, the qualification of the African teams has run through the African U-23 championship .

Eligible to play are players born after January 1st, 1993 and three older players. The squad was named on June 29th. Goalkeepers Itumeleng Khune and Mulomowandau Mathoho were nominated as older players . Itumeleng Khune also took part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , where he received the red card in the second group match against Uruguay . Together with the Nigerian John Obi Mikel, he is the participant with the most A-internationals counted by FIFA (75).
